Hi SBYC and EYC Members
The Alberta Cup and start of the Fall Series was a great weekend of racing. The winds were up, the sailing was competitive, the starts were hectic and the party Saturday night at EYC was a big hit. Congratulations to everyone who participated and made the Alberta Cup/Fall series a huge success. A special congratulations to Don Iveson and his crew for placing 1st in Point of Order, Murray Erickson and his crew in Winedown for a great 2nd place finish and Paul Kantor in Windswept in 3rd place. I would also like to extend a special thank you to Dave and Donna Donnelly and Dave and Donna Thompson for being our race committee on Dancin' Bear. As well, congratulations are in order to all of the EYC membership and the Wabamun Sailing Club on hosting and running the Provincials. It was great to see all the boats out on the lake. Also, better late than never, I would like to pass along the results of the Jack and Jill Race, which took place on Aug. 26th. The finishing order was Winedown 1st (Sylvia and Murray), Windswept 2nd (Jen and Paul), Tipsy 3rd (Ava and Jefrey), Manana 4th (Linda and Barry), Windchime 5th (Rachel and Ian), Reflection 6th (Anita and John), Arana 7th (Liz and Greg). The season isn't over yet, and The Rose Cup is yet to take place. Due to the inability to get the Committee boat securely anchored due to high winds and big waves, the Rose Cup was cancelled and has been rescheduled for next Sunday, September 17. Racing starts at noon. See attachment! Please note that after some discussion, the Fall Series will continue to be held on Saturdays with starts at noon. My apologies for any confusion there. See you all this weekend, Bernie Riegger, SBYC Fleet Captain More tidbits of news from the provincial sailing championships...
Below are some of Rob Royer's photos of the event (click to enlarge). The Edmonton Yacht Club hosted the 2017 Alberta Sailing Championships over the September long weekend. The Regatta was a resounding success with 36 boats with 40 competitors coming from around the province to compete in three days of sailing competition.
The boats included three different classes of Lasers (standard, radial & 4.7), Fireballs and Optis. The winds totally cooperated on Saturday and Sunday but failed us on Monday morning. Regardless, 8 – 10 races were completed on the first two days of sailing. See results, below. EYC volunteers did an absolutely outstanding job of putting the Regatta together. The food crew spent countless hours shopping, cooking and putting the food out. The registration crew handled on line and in person registrations flawlessly and provided first contact friendly hospitality to competitors. On water volunteers assisted the race management people from the Wabamun Sailing Club and Calgary Yacht club with mark boats, safety boats and committee boat jobs (long hours on the water in some cool temperatures). The land crew assisted guests to locate tent spots and RV parking. The cleanup crew (almost everyone) kept bathrooms clean and stocked. The pig roast and live entertainment on Saturday night were a big hit. Many people said the lasagna they had on Sunday night was the best ever. EYC received compliments over and over from competitors, their families and friends as to how great it was to be at EYC again and what a great job EYC did running the 2017 Sailing Championships. Hope I didn’t miss anything or anyone! Rob Martin The Edmonton Yacht Club will host the 2017 Alberta Provincial Regatta, September 2, 3 and 4. The Notice of Race is here. Email Rob Martin with questions. Online registration closed August 26. Register onsite (see Notice of Race). EYC is in Seba Beach, Alberta, about an hour west of Edmonton on Highway 16.
