The Edmonton Yacht Club hosted the 2017 Alberta Sailing Championships over the September long weekend. The Regatta was a resounding success with 36 boats with 40 competitors coming from around the province to compete in three days of sailing competition.
The boats included three different classes of Lasers (standard, radial & 4.7), Fireballs and Optis. The winds totally cooperated on Saturday and Sunday but failed us on Monday morning. Regardless, 8 – 10 races were completed on the first two days of sailing. See results, below.
EYC volunteers did an absolutely outstanding job of putting the Regatta together. The food crew spent countless hours shopping, cooking and putting the food out. The registration crew handled on line and in person registrations flawlessly and provided first contact friendly hospitality to competitors.
On water volunteers assisted the race management people from the Wabamun Sailing Club and Calgary Yacht club with mark boats, safety boats and committee boat jobs (long hours on the water in some cool temperatures). The land crew assisted guests to locate tent spots and RV parking. The cleanup crew (almost everyone) kept bathrooms clean and stocked.
The pig roast and live entertainment on Saturday night were a big hit. Many people said the lasagna they had on Sunday night was the best ever. EYC received compliments over and over from competitors, their families and friends as to how great it was to be at EYC again and what a great job EYC did running the 2017 Sailing Championships.
Hope I didn’t miss anything or anyone!
