2018 Spring Series results

6/21/2018

The second and final weekend of this year's Spring Series (June 16 & 170 served up much better sailing conditions that ranged from light to moderate on both days.  With the better weather came five more entries for a total of 10 competitors.

Also in attendance was Drew Mitchell from North Sails. Drew spent two days on the lake, coaching the sailing teams and taking pictures and video that were presented at the SBYC clubhouse after sailing ended on Sunday.

Another big thank you from both clubs and the racers for the work of the Race Committee. It was a joint effort between SBYC and EYC with SBYC's Dave Donnelly serving as the Race Officer assisted by his wife Donna  and EYC Fleet Captain Tim Bowles assisted by his wife Cathy.

And finally… First Place was won by… John Semple sailing Reflection! Second place went to Dan Meade in Flyaway.Bernie Reiger in Blue Wing took third.

2018 Canada Day Celebrations

6/14/2018

Now an EYC tradition. Bring a team or come yourself for pancake breakfast and a morning trivia activity designed for everyone -- children, youth, adults, and families. Fun, learning, and prizes for all. Usually breakfast from 9:30ish to 10:45ish with the Trivia Challenge to begin at 11:00 am. Bring your digital devices to help you and get ready to ask lots of questions of Seba Sages such as David and Patti, the Hunkas, Dwayne, Larry and Eugenia, Bob, Cary, and others who are around the grounds that day. New members most welcome, and (as history demonstrates) can win! Finishing order sets prize selection order. The call for breakfast volunteers will go out closer to the event. Marg Iveson creates the challenge, assigns points for the projects, and organizes the prizes. Plan to celebrate the morning with your EYC fellow members and friends. Bribery and piracy discouraged. No cost for members' participation in breakfast, trivia, or both.

This year's Down the Lake Race runs Saturday, June 23. Register at the EYC Clubhouse at 9:00 am, Captain’s Meeting at 9:30. There will be a supper & award presentation afterward.

Here is the official Notice of Race. Here is the Registration Form. For more information, write to Fleet Captain Tim Bowles (fleetcaptain@edmontonyachtclub.ca).

2018 Spring Series days 3 & 4

6/13/2018

North Sail’s Drew Mitchell will come to Wabamun Lake to help us get the most from our racing efforts. Drew will video the racers as we vie for honors on Saturday and Sunday. Following the races, Drew will join us in the SBYC clubhouse, where he will replay videos of the weekend’s races and show us how we can improve our racing technique.

Let’s see if we can get a good showing of boats for this weekend’s races, and take advantage of North Sail’s generosity in supplying Drew to help us become better sailors. The Notice of Race and Registration Form are here.

The final half of the Spring Series will run June 16 and 17. Register Saturday at 9:00 am, Captain’s meeting at 9:30.

2018 Spring Series days 1 & 2

6/13/2018

Fleet Captain Tim Bowles writes, "Our first weekend was a success, despite having only five Racers on Sunny Saturday and two on Ch-Chilly Sunday.  Big Shout out to 'Dancin' Dave Donnelly for volunteering his time and boat Dancing Bear for the weekend. And Dave 'Doc' Reid and 'Wild' Bill Hunka on Whaler duty.

John Semple in his Tanzer 26, Reflection, won all the races(!). Theses first two days of the Spring Series took place June 9 and 10. Most years we run the Series over four consecutive weekends.

That 70's Party!

6/10/2018

EYC members won't want to miss The Party of 2018. It takes place Saturday, July 14, 2018 at the Clubhouse. This is EYC's first event as we countdown to our 100th anniversary in 2023!

We encourage you to wear 70's clothes. If your own closet, and drawers don't contain appropriate duds, try the Seba Beach Thrift Shop at the Seniors' Centre, older relatives, your local thrift shops or vintage clothing shops. Any effort here will be recognized. Remember, they are costumes rather than authentic period clothes. Google images will give you lots of ideas.

What is in place so far (activity goes rain or not):
  • 3-5 Bocci, Croquet, soccer, other games people can bring; Puzzles and board games upstairs
  • 5:30 Food and non-alcoholic drinks provided; Cash bar open
  • 7-10 Piano stylings by Lounge Lizard Tom for listening and dancing
  • 10 or so Bonfire and singalongs (weather dependent)

We will need a headcount to help us buy food & drink. Please email Marg & Terri at volunteers@edmontonyachtclub.ca, if you think you will come! Or, call Marg, 780-434-4150. Remember to tell them how many in your party.

We need some volunteers. We will contact people from the RSVP list or by phone ahead of time. Terri & Marg are the new team of Volunteer Coordinators. For now, Terri will use the phone and Marg e-mail. We already have a barkeep, shopper for supper items, and set up crew. We will need:
  • an inside coordinator and an outside one from 2:30 ish to 5 (2 members).
  • someone to BBQ say 5:15 to 6:00  (1)
  • a firebuilder/maintainer for 9:30 on (1).
  • kitchen clean up crew around the meal (2)
  • snacks layout, refills, etc; 8-10 intermittently (1 or 2)
  • building tidy up late (2)

We have That 70's Show to play and some music. Please bring your 70's musical hits for throughout the day.

Should be fun. Families very welcome. Come for all or part of the time. Be there or be square. 😎
