Represent Boaters at WMMC

6/17/2015

Dan Saunders writes, "I am looking for an alternate person who can attend a monthly meeting as the Recreational Boater’s representative for the Wabamun Watershed Management Coucil (WMMC), usually the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 6:30 – 9/10pm.  Meetings are usually in Spruce Grove.  Check out their website for more info and email me directly to let me know."

Wabamun Lake Emergency Numbers

6/12/2015

Bob Schimmel has updated the Emegency Phone Numbers list on AOSA's website. He writes, "It prints clear and it's a good idea to keep a copy next to your VHF. Here's hoping you never have to use one."

Keeping Your Mast Pointing Up

6/11/2015

Hurry Inn Directory Darryl Savage writes, "It seems that every year we have a mast come down because the turnbuckles have not been pinned or the nuts that lock them in place have not been tightened. [A mast] came down this weekend and [a Member's turnbuckles] were loosened off badly, as well as [another Member's]." [Names redacted to protect the embarrassed!]

Commodore Neil Sutcliffe wrote in a separate email, "Fleet Captain Sash Matic will purchase a set of two shroud tension gauges to help Members set the correct tension on their shrouds. Given the recent accidents with downed masts, it was considered a wise move.

"Members are reminded to check all working fittings, mooring lines and fastenings daily. The wind and waves never sleep and they work your boat 24x7. Although Members look out for each other they can not be responsible for the safety of other Members' boats. In the end it is each skipper's responsibility to keep their boat and by extension their neighbours' boats safe.

"For tips and advise on how to secure your boat, check with Harbour Master Dwayne Kegler (email) or ask any member of the Board."

Docks-in, in 77 Seconds!

6/11/2015

On May 9 we put our docks into the lake. It seemed to go very quickly, especially compared to previous years. Clubhouse Director Greg Gillingham (email) produced a 77-second version of the event, using time-lapse photography.

Board Adopts Strategy

6/11/2015

Commodore Neil Sutcliffe reports that at June 7's Board Meeting, "The most important item was the presentation of the EYC Strategic Plan, Clear Sailing , by Vice Commodore Dilara Yegani (email).  Delivered on time and on target, the Strategic Plan was the product of over twelve months and hundreds of hours of work by the Planning Committee and the Board of Directors. Clear Sailing was unanimously adopted by the Board as EYC's Strategic Plan for 2015 through 2018.

Clear Sailing will be subject to annual review and will drive the budget and planning process for EYC through the next three years. Incorporating the mission, vision and value statements that represent the foundation of the EYC community, the document ,with the attendant Member Survey Results, will be posted on the website once final proofreading is complete.

"On behalf of the Members of EYC, thanks to the Board of Directors for their work on the project and a special thanks to Captain Dilara Yegani who steered her crew of full-time and part-time members in the creation of this milestone document. Full-time crew are Linda Smith, Bill Hunks, Neil Sutcliffe and Dilara. Part-time crew includes Terry Chug, Mark Gordon, Doug Reid and past member John Cocchio, with Marg Iveson on the editorial team."

Sail Trim/Race Techniques Class

6/1/2015

Lawrence Lemieux will teach a class on Sail Trim & Race Techniques. If you are unaware of Lawrence's exemplary qualifications here is his story.

When: Saturday, June 13
Time: 10:00 to 15:00
Where: Sunshine Bay Yacht Club
Cost: $20
Bring: Food and grog

The course is open to the public. There is no need to preregister. The first two hours are spent in the classroom. Then 13:00 to 15:00 is spent on the water, although Lawrence has been known to continue teaching after the posted end time!

While SBYC will have several cruisers ready for the on-the-water session, EYC members should contact SBYC's Pat MacDonald (Fleet Captain) to ensure enough boats are available. Lawrence will divide the class amongst the boats and chase each boat in the whaler, giving instructions on improving technique.
