Wind in the Sails, Chapter Four
Four Edmonton Yacht Club juniors represented Northern Alberta in the Canadian Junior Olympic Regatta at the Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club in August 1960. Crews were made up of Wally McTavish, Dennis McCoy and Ron Roper. Teams were entered from all over Canada. They didn't win but had a wonderful time and gained a lot of experience.
The committee who had been looking for a suitable location for a permanent home for the yacht club, finally came up with a property which they thought would be suitable. The committee was made up of Harry Hayter and Allan McTavish. The property was the former Maynard cottage located next door and just south of the Hurry-Inn Cabins on the western end of Lake Wabamun. The lot had a 50 foot frontage and the adjoining Hurry Inn property had 200 feet of public beach and gave plenty of space to land the boats. The cottage was old and not in very good condition but could be a start towards something bigger and better. There was a large glassed in porch. If the living room wall was taken out, it would make a large lounge.
At a meeting in the winter of 1960-61, the members voted to buy the property, and plans were made for raising the money to pay the cost of $6,500.00. A loan was obtained from the bank for a down payment. Fees were to be raised and shares sold for $100.00 each. Everybody was very enthusiastic about having a clubhouse of our own and it looked like the Edmonton Yacht Club was off to a good start for the 1960's.
